At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
