A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
